Home Remodeling in Fort Lauderdale

Originally built in 1953 as a vacation retreat, this home reflects the charm of Fabulous 1950s Florida architecture while serving as the foundation for a Modern Mediterranean interior design transformation. Designed for warm coastal living before the widespread use of air-conditioning, the home features signature Mid-Century elements such as terrazzo floors, Jalousie windows for natural ventilation, and classic brick architectural details. These original features provide exceptional character and structural integrity, allowing the renovation to seamlessly blend historic Florida design with timeless Mediterranean elegance.

This home is located east Fort Lauderdale on a semi private lake and project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design and home remodeling can enhance architectural character while creating a sophisticated, functional living environment tailored to South Florida lifestyles.

Eclectic - Mediterranean Interior Design and Home Remodeling

From an interior design and home renovation perspective, this home offers exceptional architectural character and “great bones.” Original elements such as the brick fireplace with flanking windows, textured brick accent walls, and vaulted beam ceilings provide a strong structural foundation for an eclectic Mediterranean interior design transformation. Updated large scale windows enhance natural light, while the home’s distinctive louvered pocket doors throughout the interior preserve authentic Florida charm while improving airflow and spatial flexibility.

By blending historic Mid-Century Florida architecture with Mediterranean inspired materials, textures, and color palettes, this home remodeling project creates a refined yet relaxed coastal living environment that reflects both heritage and modern luxury.

Historic Architecture Versus Modern Home Aesthetics

While preserving historic Fort Lauderdale architecture is important in South Florida home remodeling, design should also enhance beauty and livability. In this renovation, the original terrazzo flooring and 1950s Cuban tile baseboards were replaced because their dated beige tones no longer supported the home’s Eclectic Mediterranean interior design.

Natural hand-scraped espresso wood flooring was installed throughout the home to add warmth and create visual continuity with the exposed ceiling beams and custom millwork. While terrazzo remains iconic in Mid-Century and Art Deco South Florida architecture, modern terrazzo products are now available in vibrant tiles, quartz surfaces, and countertops that complement contemporary Mediterranean and Modern interiors.

Mid Century Kitchen Design and Home Remodeling
Before and After

Kitchen Remodel Fort Lauderdale:
Transforming an Outdated 1950s Layout into a Modern Functional Kitchen Design

The original 1950s kitchen layout was outdated and inefficient for modern living. The existing custom wood cabinetry lacked adequate storage and did not accommodate essential contemporary appliances such as a built-in dishwasher, modern range, or integrated refrigerator. Additionally, the washer, dryer, and water heater occupied valuable kitchen space, limiting functionality and workflow.

Home’s Mid Century Heritage

Mid Century Architectural Integrity

To maintain the home’s 1950s architectural integrity, the kitchen remodel preserved traditional header details above the cabinetry, enhanced with integrated LED recessed lighting for improved task illumination. The custom cabinets feature classic white shaker doors accented with black moldings and decorative corbels, blending historic character with updated Modern Mediterranean style.

Space Age Inspired Kitchen Design with Retro Mid Century Details

Inspired by the 1950s fascination with rockets and the Space Age, the kitchen lighting was selected to reflect the era’s iconic design influence. The two statement light fixtures feature a retro, spaceship-inspired silhouette reminiscent of classic 1950s diners, adding authentic Mid-Century character while enhancing the kitchen’s nostalgic architectural charm. The Black Galaxy quartz countertops feature mirror-like silver flecks that visually relate to the metallic silver ceiling, reinforcing the cohesive design and subtle retro-inspired aesthetic.
