Modern Coastal Interior Design
Ocean Reef Club Luxury Remodel

When Carmen purchased her condominium at Ocean Reef Club, she reached out seeking an interior designer who understood both refined coastal living and understated luxury. From our first meeting, there was immediate alignment and a shared vision for creating a home that felt fresh, elevated, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Carmen brought warmth, trust, and openness to the design process. In return, I drew upon my longstanding experience designing at Ocean Reef Club, along with my roots in Fort Lauderdale, where coastal light, water, and architecture have continually shaped my aesthetic perspective.

Tropical Influences with Modern Sophistication

Inspired by the expansive ocean views from her residence, the design direction centered on a curated palette of sandy beige, aqua blue, and vibrant coral — tones that echo shoreline, sea, and sunset.

The foundation remains neutral and serene, allowing the aqua hues to introduce tranquility while coral provides controlled energy and visual rhythm. To elevate the composition, I incorporated polished silver accents reminiscent of sunlight reflecting across the water. These metallic elements introduce modern sophistication without overpowering the organic softness of the coastal palette.

Tropical Influences with Modern Sophistication

The result is a balanced interior — tropical in spirit, modern in execution — where natural light, texture, and color coexist effortlessly. This project exemplifies how coastal design can transcend cliché, becoming instead a study in proportion, refinement, and atmosphere.

Architectural Elements

I often introduce simple yet powerful architectural structure by framing large-scale artwork from floor to ceiling, transforming a single wall into a defined focal point. When paired with intentional gallery lighting, the art becomes immersive — not merely decorative, but architectural.

This approach creates vertical emphasis, adds proportion and scale, and brings controlled drama to the space. The result is sophisticated and curated, allowing the artwork to command attention while the surrounding design remains clean, balanced, and refined.

Classic Modern Coastal Foyer

The original vision for this foyer centered on a dramatic shell-encrusted console with a coordinating mirror framed in sculptural shell scrollwork. While visually striking, the scale proved impractical for the space.

After recalibrating, I discovered a newly opened furniture distributor carrying a remarkable natural tree-root table base finished in a translucent blue glaze. The organic form introduced movement and texture, while the subtle wash of blue reinforced the coastal narrative without overwhelming the entry.

Above it, I installed an original oil painting framed in substantial metalwork embellished with sculptural shells, coral, and sea urchin motifs. The interplay between the grounded organic base and the refined, textural artwork creates a modern architectural statement balanced by curated coastal details.
The fit was exact, down to the final inch. What began as an obstacle ultimately revealed itself as a design gift from the Universe.

Simple Coastal Kitchen Remodel

For this streamlined coastal kitchen remodel, we focused on high-impact architectural detailing rather than a full structural renovation. My general contractor installed beadboard paneling on the base cabinetry and within the tray ceiling, introducing texture and subtle dimension reminiscent of a refined seaside cottage.

The cabinetry and ceiling were painted in the same crisp white as the newly installed baseboards, creating visual continuity and reinforcing a clean, cohesive envelope. This unified color strategy enhances natural light and strengthens the architectural framework of the space.

A core principle in my interior design approach is repetition of architectural elements throughout a home to establish rhythm and harmony. In this residence, a floor-to-ceiling framed artwork serves as a dramatic focal point, intentionally aligned with the ocean view beyond. The vertical scale mirrors the surrounding architecture, anchoring the kitchen and dining area while reinforcing the coastal narrative with modern restraint.

This British Colonial inspired master bedroom blends timeless island elegance with modern coastal refinement. The bamboo four-poster bed, softened with flowing white gauze panels reminiscent of traditional mosquito netting, creates architectural presence while maintaining lightness and air.

The aqua and green palette introduces a vibrant Bahamas and Caribbean influence, evoking tropical water and lush island foliage. Driftwood-toned tile flooring grounds the space with organic texture, reinforcing the relaxed yet sophisticated coastal aesthetic.

The result is a master bedroom that feels both worldly and serene with a modern interpretation of classic British Colonial design tailored for elevated coastal living.

Modern Coastal Bedroom

This Modern Coastal bedroom layers refined structure with a touch of Old Florida charm. The whimsical fabric selection evokes vintage coastal character, introducing movement and personality while maintaining a clean, modern foundation.

Pulling coral directly from the fabric and area rug, I extended the color onto the ceiling — transforming it into an intentional architectural feature rather than an afterthought.

The Ceiling Is the Fifth Wall

In my design philosophy, the ceiling is the Fifth Wall. By treating it as an integrated design surface, the room gains depth, cohesion, and vertical balance. The coral overhead draws the eye upward, enhances proportion, and creates a fully immersive coastal environment being sophisticated, layered, and distinctly modern.
