What began as a neglected Airbnb revealed layers of mismatched flooring and substandard electrical and plumbing work. The home renovation evolved into a comprehensive architectural restoration that honored Mid-Century design principles while introducing modern infrastructure and craftsmanship.

Initially, the first-time homeowner planned modest updates—two bathroom renovations, new flooring, doors, and paint. As the design developed, the project expanded to include:

The clients initially suggested painting the ceiling white, but I saw it as one of the home's strongest architectural features. Its warmth and texture became the foundation for the design, inspiring the cabinetry finishes, millwork, and furnishings below to create a cohesive and harmonious flow throughout the home.
Mid-Century Modern Architectural Elements
A custom wood frame surrounding the television was designed to complement the kitchen island, carrying the warmth of the wood tones throughout the home. This created material continuity, reinforced the architectural vision, and transformed the television wall into a more intentional focal point.

I created a color palette balances earthy neutrals with moments of teal, rust, and deep blue, reflecting the tropical-modern character associated with Fort Lauderdale’s Mid-Century heritage.
Natural materials including wood and stone ground the design, while clean-lined furnishings and geometric forms reflect classic Mid-Century Modern principles. The result is a relaxed yet refined interpretation of Mid-Century design adapted for South Florida’s sun-soaked coastal lifestyle.

I wanted kitchen renovation to create balance between classic Mid-Century Modern design with the functionality required for contemporary living. A central island in rich espresso-toned wood cabinetry became both a visual focal point and a gathering space for dining and entertaining. Polished stone flooring adds depth, durability, and continuity throughout the home.
Oversized aqua-blue subway tile introduces subtle tropical color while maintaining the clean linear character associated with Mid-Century design. Flooring & Architectural Continuity
Original wood and tile flooring were replaced with oversized porcelain tiles in a coral rock texture, an update that introduces durability while referencing South Florida’s natural tropical landscape. The result is modern yet contextually grounded.
Select Mid-Century-inspired furnishings, including Eames-style bar stools, reinforce authenticity without veering into nostalgia.
Open-Concept Dining & Living Spaces
The open dining area centers around a substantial rustic wood table that complements the warmth and texture of the ceiling above. Black Mid-Century-inspired dining chairs and a bold black credenza visually anchor the space while reinforcing the home's architectural character.

My client requested a modern primary bathroom, which became an opportunity to reinterpret Mid-Century design through a more contemporary lens. The black-and-white palette establishes a timeless Mid-Century foundation, while contemporary fixtures and clean detailing keep the space feeling fresh rather than nostalgic. The addition of a dramatic black ceiling introduces depth and contrast, drawing the eye upward and reinforcing the room’s architectural character.
The result is not a reproduction of the past, but a reinterpretation that honors Mid-Century geometry while integrating modern craftsmanship and a more refined approach to everyday living.

In the secondary bathroom, the design shifts toward a more expressive tropical interpretation while maintaining continuity with the home's overall architectural vision. The inspiration began with a sculptural bamboo and teal mirror, which influenced the ceiling treatment and introduced a distinctly South Florida character.
Classic black-and-white basketweave floor tile references traditional Mid-Century Modern design while creating a visual connection to the primary bathroom. Layered wood detailing, bamboo-textured tile inlays, and dimensional palm leaf wallcovering enhance the tropical influence without overwhelming the architectural foundation.
The balance between clean geometry and organic texture creates a cohesive blend of Mid-Century discipline and South Florida coastal character.
Tropical Guest Bathroom Design
The guest bathroom embraces a more immersive tropical aesthetic while maintaining continuity with the home's overall architectural vision. Rich wood tones, layered millwork, and dark contrasting finishes create warmth and depth while reinforcing the clean structure associated with Mid-Century Modern design.

A recessed niche with integrated LED lighting became a focal architectural element, showcasing metallic Koi fish wallcovering framed with dark millwork. The structured framing transformed the wall treatment into an intentional architectural feature, introducing texture, dimension, and sculptural interest while balancing the room's tropical character with clean geometric lines.

Aqua basketweave wallcovering introduces softness and texture, while the metallic Koi pattern adds movement and a distinctly tropical character. Subtle gold tones woven throughout the design are echoed in the luminous mica paper on the ceiling, creating continuity between materials and reflective surfaces.
Overhead, a Capiz shell chandelier casts a warm glow that enhances the depth and texture of the surrounding finishes. The interplay of layered materials, metallic accents, and structured framing creates a bathroom that feels both composed and richly detailed, luxurious while remaining true to its South Florida influence.
