The Interior Design of
a Tradional Mediterranean Style with Modern Influences
Located in Boca Raton

A Unique Interior Design Challenge Creating for a Blind Client

This home remodeling project in East Boca Raton along the Intercoastal waterway will be thoughtfully redesigned with the traditional Mediterranean Style and updated to incorporate modern influences.

Our Modern Mediterranean interior design will be layered with traditional architectural details and coastal sophistication. Thoughtfully designed to reflect the scale of the home and the serenity of its waterfront setting, the interiors blend classic Mediterranean elements with modern finishes, custom millwork, and furnishings that create a timeless, elegant atmosphere tailored to luxury living along the Intracoastal Waterway.

This project was uniquely shaped by the fact that my client is blind and has a true appreciation for Mediterranean architecture and interior design, requiring a home remodeling approach grounded in trust, intuition, and architectural integrity rather than purely visual cues. Every decision was guided by scale, proportion, and spatial flow, principles deeply rooted in Mediterranean architecture ensuring the home feels cohesive, comfortable, and emotionally resonant, not just visually beautiful.

Modern Mediterranean Style Foyer -

Architectural Millwork to Fool the Eye

As part of the home remodeling process, in order to preserve the grand scale of the room’s thirteen-foot ceilings, the moldings were intentionally enlarged. A cost-effective solution was achieved by adding a secondary molding beneath the crown and another above the baseboards. Painting the moldings and the wall surfaces between them in a single color created the appearance of substantial, custom millwork, elevating the room with understated Mediterranean elegance.

Trompe L’oeil Architecture

To create harmony between the interior design and creating architectural elements, two faux Mediterranean arches with flanking traditional tortoise shell sconces were introduced in the living room, anchored by a large custom built mirror that reflects the light and color of the Intracoastal Waterway. This architectural motif continues into the foyer featuring a large shell-encrusted mirror with a tortoise ceiling pendent.
While many clients focus on decorative finishing touches, this project emphasized structure and architectural flow, an approach especially meaningful when designing for a blind client, where spatial experience takes precedence over purely visual details.

Interior Design Details of Traditional Mediterranean Style

A defining architectural element of the space is the remodeled tray ceiling, highlighted by a rich aqua accent and framed with the newly installed two-piece crown molding. The ceiling is finished with a modern silver linen wallpaper, while a custom medallion centers a grand Mediterranean wrought iron chandelier, adding depth and architectural presence to the room.

My design philosophy centers on balance and continuity throughout the home. Each space is intentionally connected through coordinated materials and finishes, from case goods with a Mediterranean Old World style, driftwood-inspired finishes to custom sofas and chairs in the living and family rooms that introduce a modern contrast, accented with oversized nickel nailhead detailing.

Integrating Custom Drapery with Architectural Millwork Details

I was especially pleased with how the tailored detail at the base of the custom drapery seamlessly aligned with the newly enlarged baseboards, creating a distinctive architectural moment. The fabric was meticulously color-matched and ultimately set the palette for all of the millwork, reinforcing continuity and balance throughout the space.

Traditional Interior design of
Modern Mediterranean Family & Dining Room -

Some spaces truly speak for themselves through before-and-after photography, and this home remodel is a clear example of that transformation. The stone-inspired fireplace flanked by windows, the sunken family room, the pain drywall border wall, and the open floor plan became key sources of inspiration throughout the design process.

Mediterranean Inspired Courtyard

As part of the home remodeling process, stone was added to the existing wall and capped with a Crema marble top accented with wood detailing to introduce warmth and architectural depth. Inspired by the feeling of an open Mediterranean courtyard, this feature adds texture and a sense of openness to the space. The design was carried through to the foyer wall, creating visual continuity and reinforcing architectural cohesion throughout the home.

Lighting and Architectural Transformation in a Modern Mediterranean Home

Originally, the space was overwhelmed by excessive recessed lighting. As part of the remodeling, approximately a dozen high-hat lights were removed to restore balance and create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.

The existing dining room chandelier was relocated to the new piano room, while a grand Mediterranean-style wrought iron fixture was introduced in its place, paired with tall coordinating sconces to frame the client’s artwork. A matching chandelier was installed in the family room, centered over the fireplace to establish a strong focal point. In the kitchen, five Mediterranean wrought iron pendants now illuminate the island, unifying the lighting design and reinforcing architectural continuity throughout the home.

Textiles, Color, and Custom Details That Define the Space

The fabric for this space features a bold anvil-and-leaf pattern. Its aqua tones seamlessly connect with the home’s overall color palette, while lime green accents are introduced in place of coral and add a fresh contrast against the antiqued background for a look that feels both vibrant and timeless.

On a subconscious level, both the fabric and the stone fireplace recall the dramatic atmosphere of the Shining’s Overlook Hotel, hence proof that design inspiration often comes from unexpected places.

The existing dining table centerpiece, crafted from solid molded metal and substantial enough to require two people to move, remained the focal point of the room. To complement it, I designed a custom table runner using coordinating fabrics, rope, and fringe. The dining chairs were reupholstered in a lively lime green accent, while area rugs in the dining and family rooms share a cohesive color story yet offer distinctly different designs, creating harmony without repetition throughout the home.
