Modern Kitchen Remodel as an Architectural Anchor
Las Olas Isles, Fort Lauderdale
I designed this modern kitchen remodel in Las Olas Isles, Fort Lauderdale as a direct response to the homeowner’s lifestyle, while reinforcing the home’s interior architecture. The intent was to create a clean, open kitchen that feels intentional, highly functional, and seamlessly integrated into the surrounding living spaces.
Kitchen Design & Architectural Framework
The dark wood ceiling bridge establishes a strong architectural datum, framing the island while defining the kitchen zone without the need for walls. Its contrast and integrated lighting introduce depth and hierarchy within the open-plan space.
This same architectural language is repeated over the range as a scaled-down frame, transforming the cooking wall into a focal point. The detail continues at the wine and coffee bar, where it shifts vertically to frame the custom bamboo stained glass artwork.
By expressing this element at multiple scales, the design creates a cohesive rhythm that unifies the kitchen and adjacent areas into a clean, structured composition.
Kitchen Layout and Functionality
I chose to use custom cabinetry as a defining element of the kitchen’s modern character. Clean lines, integrated appliances, and thoughtful detailing create a streamlined, architectural look while eliminating visual clutter.
When a room full of wine cases arrived, it became clear the original eating area needed to evolve. I transformed that space into a dedicated wine and coffee bar, which led to the design of a custom island with seating for six, allowing the kitchen to function as both a workspace and a central gathering point.
The result is a kitchen that balances simplicity with functionality—delivering a modern, luxury custom kitchen that reflects the coastal lifestyle of Fort Lauderdale.
Integrated Wine Bar and Coffee Station
I repeated the same architectural elements at the wine and coffee bar where it becomes a vertical millwork surround, creating a cohesive rhythm across the space while also framing the custom bamboo stained glass artwork.
This design vocabulary is expressed at multiple scales to unify the kitchen and bar area, elevate key moments, and deliver a clean, structured modern composition.
Custom Cabinetry & Architectural Details
Materials, Finishes & Craftsmanship

Before & After – Open Plan Kitchen and Family Room
Before: The original family room lacked architectural definition, with a flat wall and minimal detailing that did not establish a focal point or connect visually to the adjacent spaces.
After: The redesigned space introduces a structured architectural composition, where dark wood framing defines the openings and anchors the stone TV wall, creating depth, contrast, and a clear focal point within the room.
The addition of the wood framing establishes a consistent architectural language carried throughout the home. Rather than treating the family room as a separate space, the dark wood frames connect it back to the kitchen and bar area through proportion, material, and repetition. This creates a cohesive visual rhythm, allowing each area to maintain its own identity while seamlessly unifying the architectural elements within this Las Olas home.
The custom dining hutch reinforces this continuity, providing both storage and a refined focal point. Dining chairs were tailored to coordinate with the adjacent living area, maintaining a consistent interior palette.
Above, a black drop ceiling with a silver leaf finish and bold framing defines the dining zone, establishing it as a distinct architectural moment within the open plan.
I find it especially compelling to incorporate a fireplace in a South Florida home, where it becomes an unexpected and distinctive feature that adds both warmth and character to the space.
Entertaining and Connected Living
The kitchen was designed to extend naturally into the surrounding living spaces, supporting both everyday living and entertaining.
The custom bar integrates seamlessly into the dining and living areas, maintaining the same modern millwork language throughout. The LED-lit blue agate stone backsplash introduces contrast and depth, creating a striking focal point while entertaining.
