A Unique Interior Design Challange: Creating for a Blind Client
With over two decades of experience in interior design and home remodeling, I’ve enjoyed working with clients from Ocean Reef Club to Fort Lauderdale, Weston, and Parkland to Boca Raton and Palm Beach. Each project brings challenges and rewards, but my most unique experience has been designing for a blind client.
This stunning home in East Boca Raton is a testament to a unique design journey. To learn more about my experience working with my blind client and conveying all of the elements within the interior design and home remodeling of his home, please visit my blog Mediterranean Karma (Link)

To maintain the grand scale of this room with its thirteen-foot ceilings, I wanted to enhance the size of the moldings. A cost-effective approach to achieve this was by adding an additional molding below the crown and another above the baseboards. By painting all the moldings and the wall in between the same color, we created the look of elegant, luxurious moldings that elevate the entire space.
To achieve harmony between this space's interior design and architecture, I designed two faux Mediterranean arches in the living room, incorporating a large custom built-in mirror to reflect the light and colors from the intercoastal waterway. I carried this theme into the foyer with a matching arch featuring a stunning shell-encrusted mirror. Often, clients don’t fully grasp how finishing touches and accessories bring the entire room together at the end of the design process—but for this particular client, being blind, those visual details held no interest.

One of the standout architectural features in this room is the remodeled tray ceiling, painted in a rich Aqua accent color and framed with newly added two-piece crown molding. The ceiling now boasts a modern nickel/silver linen wallpaper, with a custom medallion highlighting a grand Mediterranean wrought iron chandelier at the center.
My design philosophy focuses on maintaining balance throughout the entire residence. In each room, the details are thoughtfully connected. For instance, the case goods feature a Mediterranean Old World driftwood-like finish. At the same time, the custom sofas and chairs in the living and family rooms bring a modern touch, accented with oversized nickel/silver nailheads.

Some rooms genuinely speak for themselves through "Before" and "After" pictures; this entire home remodel is a perfect example of that transformation. The stone-like fireplace flanked by windows, the sunken family room, the border wall, and the open architecture of the space particularly inspired me.
Originally, the room was flooded with high-hat lights—too many for the design. During the remodel, we removed about a dozen of them to create a more balanced and inviting atmosphere.
The existing dining room chandelier was relocated to the new piano room. In its place, I selected a grand Mediterranean-style wrought iron light fixture paired with tall matching sconces to frame the client's artwork. A tall matching chandelier was installed in the family room, centered over the fireplace, creating a focal point. The kitchen island is now illuminated by five Mediterranean wrought-iron pendants, bringing cohesion to the overall design.

I discovered the perfect fabric for this space, featuring a large anvil/leaf pattern that evokes a Southwestern-Indian vibe. The Aqua color ties in beautifully with the rest of the home, and instead of Coral, we introduced Lime Green accents against an antiqued background for a fresh yet timeless look.
Interestingly, both the fabric and the fireplace remind me, on a subconscious level, of the Overlook Hotel from The Exorcist. Inspiration often comes from unexpected places!
The existing centerpiece, made of solid molded metal and so heavy it requires two people to move, remained the focal point of the dining table. I designed a custom table runner using coordinating fabrics, rope, and fringe to complement it. The dining chairs were reupholstered in an accent lime green for added vibrancy. The rugs in both the dining and family rooms share a similar color palette but offer completely distinct looks, creating harmony and variety throughout the home.

My inspiration for adding stone to the existing wall and capping it with a Crema marble top with wood detailing came from the idea of an open Mediterranean courtyard. I wanted to bring that feeling of warmth and openness into the space, a detail I carried through to the foyer for continuity.
The client wanted to keep their existing wall unit, but I needed to elevate it to match the room's grand scale. To achieve this, I designed a custom base that complemented the larger baseboards, raising the unit by eleven inches and bringing it into perfect proportion with the space.
I took advantage of the niche where the garage and office doors were set to further emphasize the room's architectural scale. I designed door frames with crown molding and added a header to enhance their presence. This detail was repeated at every door, ensuring consistency and cohesion throughout the room.
