Initial Concept Development
Custom home design concept begins with the initial sketches and hand-drawn floor plans to developing the relationship between architecture, interior spaces, and outdoor living, each concept begins on paper. These early studies explore proportions, circulation, and the placement of the home around the central pool, turning an initial vision into a cohesive custom home design before the concept is developed into architectural drawings by our licensed architect.

Designing the Home Around the Central Pool
Above is my initial floor plan concept, developed from the basic parameters established for the home: a living room, kitchen, party room, primary suite, four guest rooms, grill area, and three-car garage.
I organized these spaces around the central pool and open sun deck, creating a private, inward-facing layout that connects the primary living spaces and guest accommodations to the outdoor environment.

Contemporary South Florida Architectural Design
The front elevation begins to translate the floor plan into an architectural expression. The design explores a clean, contemporary South Florida aesthetic, with strong horizontal lines, generous glass doors, a simple roof profile, and a three-car garage integrated into the composition. Tropical landscaping softens the architecture and reinforces the connection to the Florida setting, while the elevated entry creates a distinct focal point for the home.

Understanding the Client's Lifestyle
When my general contractor and I first met with the client, a single homeowner with a very clear vision for his new custom home in Fort Lauderdale, he arrived with something I always love to see, a floor plan he had already been thinking through in detail.
Private Resort-Style Amenities
Once I understood his vision and, more importantly, his lifestyle, I immediately saw the opportunity to create something more than just a house. We were designing his own private resort in Fort Lauderdale, with the entire home organized around the pool and outdoor living experience.
Custom Home Design Program
The Design-Build program included all of the essentials:
Three-car garage
Primary bedroom suite with a large walk-in closet and private bath
Open kitchen and living area
Four guest bedrooms with private accommodations
And then came the fun part, the private resort amenities:
Central swimming pool
Exterior shower
Outdoor grill and entertaining area
Dedicated party room with a dance floor and bar
Collaborating Through the Design-Build Process
Once I understood how the client wanted to live and entertain, my general contractor and I did what designers have been doing forever: we brought out the pencil and eraser and started moving walls around.
The first change was relocating the guest room positioned between the kitchen and party room. I suggested connecting these spaces to create a much more generous entertaining area and improve the flow between the kitchen, living spaces, pool, and party room.
I also explored creating a private, covered entrance from the garage directly into the primary suite. But then the client suggested something I hadn't considered, opening the primary closet directly to the hallway.
Refining the Floor Plan Together
That is exactly why the early stages of a design-build project are so valuable. The best ideas don't always come from one person. They come from the conversation between client, designer, contractor, and architect, and sometimes the client has the idea that inspires the design.
