Kitchen showroom verses Interior Designer with
Kitchen Design and Home Remodeling background
This kitchen design and home remodeling project is the perfect example of how an Interior Designer can see beyond just installing cabinets and calling it your "New Kitchen."
Today's kitchen designs are open and considered the heart of the home. The open concept kitchen design needs to incorporate how it will impact the interior architecture and interior design.

Above are the "Before Pictures" of my client's 2 year old traditional Kitchen that she had purchased through a kitchen showroom. Her Kitchen design consisted of production cabinets with an overall dated design. During the '90s, home design and interior architecture incorporated ten-foot ceilings that allowed the upper cabinets to alternate in height and depth; however, this kitchen only has eight-foot ceilings and the upper cabinets look very crowded.
Her kitchen designer did not correctly explain this detail in her kitchen design, and therefore she was never happy with her new Kitchen.
This Kitchen remodel did not only begin with a bad design and miscommunication; it is also is an excellent example of the importance of having a good Kitchen designer and home remodeling contractor who is looking out for your best interest. When I met this client, she was in a lawsuit with her past contractor due to black mold forming under her new Bamboo wood flooring. Unfortunately, her remodeling contractor made two elementary but costly mistakes just to save him a few dollars and labor.
Firstly, he did not install plastic Visqueen under the Bamboo wood flooring allowing the moisture from the concrete to built up and grow Black Mold.
Secondly, the contractor also installed the wood flooring under the lower cabinets making it impossible to be removed. Generally speaking, my rule for flooring is that it is best to have your cabinets sitting on bare concrete floors. However, this rule excludes marble floors since the material is thick and needs to be Mudd-set; hence the cabinets need to be installed on top of the marble flooring.
As for tile floors, I inform the client of the complications of tile under cabinets. For instance, if a tile needs to be replaced or if they (or a new homeowner) want to remodel their home with new flooring.
My final rule is never to install any type of wood flooring under your Kitchen cabinets. Even with a Visqueen barrier, you will have the same moisture and Black Mold issue if you ever have a water leak. I also recommend not gluing the wood flooring to the existing flooring - the adhesive is very difficult to remove, even with industrial sanding machine.

The completed Kitchen remodel shows a traditional off-white kitchen featuring a rich dark espresso island with seating. This Kitchen is designed using custom cabinets extending from floor to ceiling. The Island, with its custom cabinets, allowed us to encase the wall with wood paneling, corbels, and applied moldings.
I like to use matching door panels on the refrigerator and dishwasher for a clean interior architectural feeling for Traditional or Modern Kitchens.
As for the new engineered wood flooring, we ground the old adhesive, sealed the concrete floors with a liquid barrier, and then topped it off with the Visqueen giving us double protection.

”Its All in the Details”
I have designed beautiful kitchens with production-made kitchen cabinets; however, I prefer custom kitchen cabinets. When working on a kitchen design with my custom kitchen manufacturer, we have the flexibility to create unique elements for the interior architectural space.
Firstly, the quality and finishes are of the highest quality. My workroom builds the entire crown molding in two large pieces to eliminate all of the seams at the corners.
With custom cabinets, we can create focal points like the dark espresso range hood with the matching framed onyx tile and corbels.
Also, please note the undercabinet lighting is built-in flush with a matching finish. This detail can be essential when you are at your island with seating or a table across the room.
I only recommend the composite granite sinks in all of my kitchen remodeling projects and I love how the nickel faucet and hardware sparkle against the black sink.
My client also owns a vacation home on the beach and knowing her love of the ocean, I wanted to find her a beautiful natural granite stone. I found this "Ocean Beige" with streaks of Blue-Green, and she fell in love with it, and the remaining Kitchen has rich black quartz countertops.
