Mediterranean architecture and interior design might be the ultimate melting pot, consisting of many different influences. The Mediterranean-style homes originated from Spain, Italy, and the south of France. This blend of architecture became popular during the 1920s in warm-weather climates such as California and South Florida.

The blending of the interior and exterior spaces is the foundation for the traditional Mediterranean home decor and, as the Tuscans call "Casa Aperta," or open house. This connection to nature is characterized by its rustic textures and earth tone color schemes inspired by the sea and sky with cobalt-blue and aqua, marigold yellows, terracotta red, rich browns, and ochre. In addition, natural materials are abundant in these traditional homes, from wrought iron gates, terracotta tiled floors, Venetian plaster walls, and mosaic tiles.

Eclectic - Mediterranean Interior Design and Home Remodeling

Built as a vacation home in 1953, we have elements known as the "Fabulous 50's Florida Architecture". Before the advent of air-conditioning, every Mid-Century Florida home design included "cool to the touch" terrazzo floors and Jalousie windows to make use of the entire window opening. Fireplaces, feature walls, and indoor planters were made from brick, perhaps to remind the homeowner of their northern home.

As we say, "This home has good bone structure" with its brick fireplace and flanking windows, brick accent wall, vaulted beam ceiling, large new windows, and every interior door is a louvered pocket door.

Eclectic - Mediterranean Style Living Room

This home's interior design and remodeling included a new wood mantel, matching window frames, and new door frames that will relate to the existing ceiling beams and new rustic wood flooring.
I believe this remodeling project significantly demonstrates the visual impact of millwork and the warmth it brings to this Eclectic Mediterranean style home.

Speaking of warmth, Some designers might say that I broke a cardinal rule when I covered the regionally correct Terrazzo flooring - not to mention the original baseboards are made from 1950's Cuban Tiles. I am sorry, I am not a fan of terrazzo unless it is "Totally AbFab," In Fabulous '50s, pink or turquoise accented with mirror chips as seen in some beautifully restored Sobe Art-Deco hotel.

As you can see from the before picture, this terrazzo and Cuban tiles were dirty beige, so we installed natural solid wood hand-scraped espresso wood flooring throughout the home remodel.

"Ugly has no place in my Interior Design Style"

Today there are new unique, and inspiring Terrazzo products such as tiles and quartz countertops in an array of colors -

Customize Everything

As an interior designer, I like to customize items to fit the home's interior architecture.

Accessories add Balance and Personality to a Room

The final stage of the interior design process is the placement of the accessories, and sometimes, this essential addition to a home's design is overlooked. I love the use of silver in Eclectic decor, and it seems to add sparkle to the home's design.

Please note all of the silver elements around the room and how they add unity -
* Silver in the chandelier and sconces
* The silver accents in the custom console and china cabinet
* The silver coral in the window boxes, urns atop the mantel,
large candle holders flank the fireplace, and a Chinese statue of a man.
* The silver is also present on the coffee and side table,
dining table and chairs, and in the Kitchen

1950’s Kitchen Design and Home Remodeling
Before and After

The kitchen has ugly custom wood cabinets with no room for a modern dishwasher, much less today's built-in refrigerator or range. As you can see, the washer, dryer, and water heater are taking up valuable kitchen real estate. This home was all original, including its gas wall heaters, with the only exceptions being the barrel tile roof, central AC, and new windows.

Kitchen Design & Remodel
with inspirations from the homes 1950’s heritage

I wanted to keep the home's integrity with its 50's architecture, so the new kitchen design includes the header above the cabinets and extended them with LED high-hats to add much needed task lighting in the kitchen design. The custom kitchen cabinets are the classic white shaker doors with black moldings and corbels.

The small subway tile backsplash made from Carrara marble adds warmth, texture, and a natural element to a Mediterranean style home.

The Black Galaxy quartz countertops have specks of mirror-like silver sparkle that relate to the metallic silver ceiling.

The 50's home design was inspired by rockets and spaceships, and I love how the two light fixtures look like a spaceship and remind me of the 50's diners.

But what is in a name -

That's what I love about the freedom of Eclectic Decor is the ability to mix and match different interior design styles and create some interesting interior architecture.

This colorful, Eclectic interior design relies on the creative use of moldings, paneling, and color - The backlit Blue Agate quartz countertop creates some added drama

As per my belief in the Universe, this Venitian mirror on-lay was a gift. I had purchased the mirror for the foyer of a "Zen Modern Contemporary" (Link) home decor, but it arrived damaged, so we gave it a new life.
