“Traditional Kitchen Remodel”

Located in Mizner Country Club, Boca Raton, 33496

Here is a perfect example of where hiring an interior / kitchen designer goes beyond just buying cabinets and having them installed - during the kitchen remodel I also changed the wall color to a fern leaf green and added crisp white crown molding and applied moldings on the walls and around the glass sliding doors. I purchased a new matching white table and chairs and then had both the chairs and bar stools upholstered in a coordinating fabric.

Below you can see that we went beyond just a kitchen remodel and proceeded with the interior design of the family room starting with designing a new fireplace mantel to match the kitchen island, drapery, carpet, grass-cloth wallpaper and painting, furnishings and accessories.

Below are the “Before Pictures” of my clients 2 year old kitchen that she purchased through a kitchen showroom and she was never happy with it. This is a production kitchen that she never wanted or realized that all of the upper cabinets did not go to the ceiling -

This kitchen remodel serves as a testament in regards to working with knowledgeable and trustworthy contractors who will help educate you in what’s right for your circumstances.

I would think that this is a result in the kitchen cabinet sales person’s narrow thinking had presumed that all kitchens needed the trendy two hight upper cabinet and crown molding look.

I too like the two different hight upper cabinet look however with an 8’ ceiling it just looks out of proportion and tight.

Getting back to contractors who don’t have your best interest - the real issue here was not the kitchen cabinets but the Bamboo wood floors -

First of all when the beautiful bamboo wood floors first came out I researched them and found that they had many issues and I would never recommend them to my clients - inpast years the technology got a lot better but as with any wood floors you need a barrier between your concreet slab and the porous wood - For whatever reason the flooring store used but kitchen showroom did not install and barrier - not even a visqueen vapor barrier - and secondly and far worse is that for his own ease he installed the bamboo wood floors prior to the kitchen cabinets being installed saving him the time involved to cut around the base cabinets.

Please be advised and a good way to test your contractor and his loyalties -

My #1 rule is no wood flooring that is placed on a concrete slab should ever go under built in kitchen cabinets even with a vapor barrier - reason being if you get a plumbing leek due to sink, dishwasher, ice maker, or built-in coffee maker water will get under the wood flooring and as with my client black mold will form.

When it comes to tile - ideally it should be cut at base cabinets and a trim molding applied - this way if you or the next home owner wants to change the tile floor but keep the existing kitchen it makes things a lot easer for the next contractor - however if you are replacing a large area of tile there maybe a slope with concrete floor and as in one job of mine it was a 2 1/2” difference - therefore using the new tile flooring to level the floor is a good solution.

Pictured above is the completed kitchen remodel showing a traditional off-white kitchen with the island accented in a rich dark espresso color stain. Since we are using custom made kitchen cabinets we can wrap the existing drywall with wood paneling, applied moldings and baseboards and design the end of the cabinets flush so that the entire kitchen island is one continuous element. I used the same kitchen layout with the exception of moving the microwave from old pantry and incorporating it with the wall oven which gives us more prime pantry space. As you can see all of the cabinets go to the ceiling with one continuous crown molding with the rope detail. For a traditional kitchen I like to use matching raised panel doors on refrigerator and dishwasher with a very clean, almost a pin strip glaze that matches the color of the island.

Please note that the new floor is an engineered hardwood flooring material installed over the existing concrete slab that has been sealed and then the Visqueen vapor barrier was laid under the flooring giving the homeowner 2 layers of protection - also the flooring stops at the base cabinets with room for the wood flooring to expand and contract under the shoe molding.

Its all in the details - The new custom built range hood is now an architectural element in the room featuring its rich dark wood - I also incorporated quartz stone frame and tile inlay to match the same detail as on the backsplash.

The sink is made of a composite granite and also comes in other colors - this is the only sink that I recommend and I love the black makes nickel faucets sparkle.
